In May 1926 a crew crossed the North Pole in the semi-rigid Italian built dirigible 'Norge' under the command of Roald Amundsen, the famed Norwegian polar explorer, (who was also the first to reach the South Pole) and the American explorer Lincoln Ellsworth; the pilot was Hjalmar Riiser-Larsen, who served as navigator. After a successful 16-hour flight, the men reached the North Pole and landed at Teller in northwestern Alaska.
