Philadelphia: Joseph Dennie, 1809 - 1814. Hardcover. With an article titled "Masonic Oration", a tribute to a Marine William S. Bush, who was killed on August 19, 1812 on board the USS Constitution, "Old Ironsides", in the naval battle with the H.M.S. Guerriere. The Port Folio was a Philadelphia literary and political magazine, published 1801–1814 by Joseph Dennie, one of the leading scholars and authors of the Federalist period, who wrote under the name Oliver Oldschool. The Port Folio was the first important American literary journal; its pages include political articles, biographies, poetry and contemporary events.

The issues are randomly bound into the three volumes and include: September - December 1809, and September 1814; July - December 1812; and January 1813, December 1811, and July 1814. The last volume (at the end of the January 1813 issue), is the tribute to a Marine killed on the Frigate Constitution by the British in the Frigate Guerriere, in the War of 1812. This tribute is titled: "A Masonic Oration on the Death of Brother William S. Bush, Lieutenant of Marines, Who was killed on board the frigate Constitution, during her engagement with the British frigate Guerrier, on the 19th of August, 1812 ... before the officers of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania ..."(p100). Despite containing the July 1814 issue, the volume does not include the image of a sea battle between the American ship Peacock and the British ship Epervier.

8vo, many engraved illustrations. Three quarter tan leather and marbled boards. Boards a bit rubbed, spines rubbed (gilt title, "Port Folio"); foxing and toning of text; folding plate in Vol 3 ruffled, cracked at outer edge. OCLC: 6594597. Very good overall. Item #19951
