Item #19967 Cornwall, NY Land Indenture, Francis & Jacob Springsteen to Royal Flint. Royal Flint, Francis Springsteen.

Cornwall, NY Land Indenture, Francis & Jacob Springsteen to Royal Flint.

Orange County, NY: 27th March, 1792. Manuscript indenture on laid paper signed by both Springsteens (one with his mark), to Royal Flint, of a large tract of land divided into 8 equal lots with location history given as west of Bear Hill tract and bound by plots held by Israel and Benjamin Rose and Samuel [Hates?], and originally owned by Cadwallader Colden.

The purchaser, Royal Flint, was an interesting character who was very involved in the Bank-manipulated Crash which occurred in the same year. Flint was a New York City speculator who helped bring about the nation's first financial crisis, the Panic of 1792, by manipulating the New York stock market. The crisis, which bankrupted many, was reaching its peak in March of 1792, the same month in which Flint makes this land purchase in Orange County. He emerged intact: just 2 years later he also acquired a large tract of over 300,000 acres in Tioga County NY with a partner.

12 1/2 X 15 1/2". A few small holes at folds, not affecting text, evenly toned; with two wax stamps at lower right. Very good condition. Item #19967
