Scarce complete set of the work on Chinese junks, by the French Yangtze River expert navigator, Captain Louis Audemard (1865 - 1955). Audemard produced the most detailed charts of the Yangtze River of his time. The French, beginning in 1901, had charted the section from of the river Chungking to Ichang, as well as other sections. Commander Audemard and his men went up the river in a sampan and, chuting or dragging the boat for over 410 rapids, made it clear that the Three Gorges area would never be navigable by steamboat.
