La Biblia Sagrada, a saber: El Antiguo y el Nuevo Testamento, traducidos de la Vulgata Latina en espanol. American Bible Printed in Spanish.

New York: Edicion Estereotipica por A. Chandler, 1826. Nueva edition. Hardcover. A scarce American Bible printed in Spanish, the personal copy of Ebenezer Nye (1799 - 1891), ship's captain from Sandwich Massachusetts, who was the master of the brig Cicero when it sailed on a trading voyage from New York to Maracaibo, Venezuela. The Mystic Seaport at Connecticut owns Captain Nye's journal from this voyage which "Mentions shipboard routine, and navigational information. Cicero was driven ashore and wrecked while approaching Maracaibo. The crew fought off Indians and salvaged part of the cargo. (Nye then spent 4 months in Bogata, returning to Maracaibo in November 1827.)" The front free end paper has Nye's signature, and below it, "Maracaibo, 22 July 1827", which suggests that this Bible may have been acquired in gratitude for surviving the shipwreck and subsequent attack. The August 11, 1891 obituary in the Sandwich Observer notes that "Capt. Nye was a proficient scholar in all geographical, geometrical, mathematical and astronomical studies, and many of the younger navigators of the bay cruisers are graduates of his winter evening school he taught for their benefit. His observation of the planets on the bright starry evenings were ever a delight to the school teachers and scholars of his village, and writing up his surveys of harbors and rivers along our coast for "Blunt's American Coast Pilot", rendered him a proficient pilot for nearly every harbor along the entire length of our coast and the Gulf of Mexico." Nye's son Ebenezer F. Nye was also a ship's captain, master of the Mt. Wollaston, which disappeared in the Arctic.
