Sydney: The Rose Stereographs, ca. 1905. Crisp, fine silver gelatin image with most all store signs in Chinese. Number 6120, with the additional text, "A narrow winding street with tall buildings on either side; it is the principal thoroughfare in Hong Kong". Text at verso explains, "The Government and the principal people are English; many of them are wealthy, living in regal style, and bearing the reputation of being very hospitable. The bulk of the population is still Chinese, and the dominant language is a bastard English and Cantonese. The policemen are Indians, and the currency is the Mexican dollar."
