Sydney: The Rose Stereographs, ca. 1905. Number 6206, with the additional text, "It looks like a veritable land of palaces, so splendid are the buildings". Text at verso explains, "to the right is Victoria Peak, which forms a huge cone in the centre of the Island of Hong Kong, and on its slope are the mansions of the wealthy residents... The tonnage in 1904, inwards and outwards, was 17,162,465, represented by 44,015 vessels, inclusive of 26,037 British and foreign, and 17,978 Chinese junks... England draws about L20,000 a year in revenue from this rich little colony of hers, without counting the profits made by her traders" The banks make such big returns that they find a difficulty in describing them in their balance-sheets, and a recent return of one of the principal banks showed a profit of 72 per cent on its capital... The land of Hong Kong is nationalised, the tenure being for 75 years, after which it is revalued by the Government, who find it a source of handsome revenue ."
