Canton, China: Printed for the Proprietors, 1835. Hardcover. Rare early map of Canton and the Pearl River, extending from Canton down to Ladrone Island, with place names in Chinese and English, including "factories" shown at Canton and Hong Kong island, from the third volume of "The Chinese Repository", the world's first major journal concerned with Chinese culture, language, history and politics. The Repository was edited by Elijah Coleman Bridgman (1801 - 1861), an early Protestant missionary who arrived in China in 1830, prior to the Opium War. Bridgman was the first American "China expert"; in addition to editing the Repository he wrote a history of the United States in Chinese, and as a translator worked with the Chinese government on the first treaty between the US and China. The volume covers from May 1834, to April 1835.

This volume of the Repository is replete with fascinating material: The Chinese Written Language; Remarks on Chinese History; Chinese Pirates; Early Intercourse with China; Chinese Classics; Agriculture in China; Jews in China; Mohammedism; Promulgation of the Gospel in China; Comparisons of the Modes of Printing in Chinese; Funeral Sermon; Portuguese in China; British Authorities in China; British Relations with China; The Mongols; Diet of the Chinese; Chinese Peasant Hoo Loo; Universal Peace; Small Feet of Chinese Females; Woo Tsihteen, Empress of China; The Fur Trade; Christian Missions in China; The Sandwich Islands; The Bonin Islands; Lord North's Island (Pelew); Negotiations with China (p417); Sumatra; The Turks; Rice; Panang; The Huns; Japan; Obituary of Dr. Morrison; Burmah.
