His travels included the Far East and Central Asia, and leadership of the 1904 British expedition to Tibet, during which a massacre of Tibetans occurred. He became British commissioner to Tibet and President of the Royal Geographical Society and also was known for his religious writings and spiritualism. 8vo, original blue cloth boards, gilt title on spine (black text on front), bw frontispiece and map, vii, 210 pp. Spine sunned, chipped at head, small triangular area of loss at cloth spine.
