The best known work of the Italian 16th century poet Tasso (1544 - 1595), an epic poem depicting the struggle between Christians and Muslims during the siege of Jerusalem at the end of the First Crusade. In the poem, Armida, the beautiful Saracen witch, is sent to seduce the Christian warrior Rinaldo, instead falling in love. Translated into English Spenserian Verse, with a life of the author by J. H. Wiffen. Small 8vo, lxiv, 500pp, all edges gilt, with 9 engravings, numerous in text wood engravings. Includes list of the English nobility who participated in the Crusades, listed under the king's reign. Three quarter dark brown gilt calf and marbled boards. Front board with a bit of cracking to marbled paper. Internally a bit of light foxing to plates. Very good overall. Item #20921
