Farsley, England: 1934. Photographic souvenir with real b&w photographs laid down, in honor of the Reverend Samuel Marsden and the monument erected in his honor; "Proceeds of sale for C. M. S. Funds". Photograph at front of folding souvenir of a painted portrait of Marsden, as well as real b&w photograph of the Marsden monument in Farsley, laid down inside the folding souvenir. Text at the left, of the inscriptions on the monument, including that Marsden brought back from Australia the first wool for commercial use, which was stored in a warehouse on the site. In 1809 Marsden returned to Australia with 5 Spanish merino sheep given him by King George III.

Marsden (1764 – 1838) was a prominent member of the Church Missionary Society who introduced Christianity to New Zealand and later became the senior Anglican clergyman and a civil magistrate in New South Wales. He employed convicts for farming, and acquired large tracts of land and played an important role in the development of agriculture in New South Wales. A small amount of pencil addition at verso of brochure, and printed proceeds of sale for C. M. S. Funds (Christian Missionary Society). Folded, 4 1/2 x 7" Very good condition. Item #21196
