Mackey's Masonic Ritualist: or, Monitorial Instructions in the Degrees from Entered Apprentice to Select Master.

New York: Clark & Maynard, 1869. Hardcover. Albert Gallatin Mackey (1807 - 1881) was an American physician and author best known for his works on freemasonry, particularly the Masonic Landmarks. Mackey, known as the American Masonic historian, founded 'The Southern and Western Masonic Miscellany', a weekly magazine, and later a Quarterly. He served as Grand Lecturer and Grand Secretary of The Grand Lodge of South Carolina, as well as Secretary General of the Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite for the Southern Jurisdiction of the United States.

Mackey developed Masonic procedure in trial and punishment, and the majority of the parliamentary practice of Masonic bodies. In 1935 the Albert Gallatin Mackey Medal, a Grand Lodge Medal, was established and is awarded "for distinguished service in Masonry".

"The greater part of this work ... is composed of the 'Manual of the Lodge' and the 'Book of the Chapter' ... To these I have added a similar manual on the degrees of the Council, so that the present book embraces in its monitorial instructions all that can be lawfully taught in print of the degrees of the American Rite". (Preface, p1). Contents headings include The Lodge, Ancient Ceremonies, the Twenty Five Landmarks, The Chapter, and The Council.
