California: Ca. 1900. Pamphlet. Advertising piece for "gentle, California Syrup of Figs", with color illustration at front wrapper of group of animals including a kangaroo.
Nine animals are pictured and described, including the Kangaroo at page 8, "The kangaroo is found only in Australia. There are thirty varieties. The mother kangaroo carries her babies in a pouch. The kangaroo has very large hind legs and can jump 15 or 20 feet. On open ground, he can outrun the fleetest dog. The opossum, his little cousin, lives in the United States". Children taking part in the contest are instructed to find the hidden animal illustrated on each page in order to win a free bottle of California Syrup of Figs and Elixir of Senna, "a pleasant, mild and dependable Laxative which may be safely given to babies and children of all ages" (inside front wrapper).
