New York: Harper's Weekly, 1889. A double page wood engraving with 9 views of the construction of the Croton Dam and aqueduct. The 'old' Croton aqueduct was built between 1837 and 1842, and the 'new' Croton aqueduct was built in 1890, distributing much needed water to New York City. From the Harper's Weekly, a long running American newspaper well-known for its wood-cut illustrations. The views are numbered showing the Masonry Dam in construction, Earth Dam (Upper Reservoir), View of the Works, looking toward the New England RR, A Gate-House on Upper Dam, Croton River showing water line, Fountains to purify water, Joe's Mountain and Valley, Spillway at the Lower Earth Dam, General View of the Valley showing Upper and Lower Dam, with the connecting Tunnel. B & w, approximately 15 1/2 x 22", very clean, closed tears at center fold top and bottom, repaired archivally. Very good overall. Item #21619
