Item #21657 Autographed with photographic portrait of Sir Aylmer Gould Hunter Weston. Lt. Gen. Sir Alymer Hunter Weston.

Autographed with photographic portrait of Sir Aylmer Gould Hunter Weston.

Ca. 1915. Photographic portrait of a controversial British commander of the 29th Division, at the landing at Gallipoli at Cape Helles near the entrance to the Dardanelles. Hunter Heston (1864 - 1940) wrote optimistically to his wife, "the odds against us are heavy. However, nothing is impossible”. Hunter Weston unfortunately did not focus his troop landings at unopposed beaches, causing his division to suffer heavy losses, and giving the opposing Turks the opportunity to regroup.

The portrait (4 x 5 3/4") with a clipped signature below, dated 7/8/20, laid down. With some marginal glue residue at far right border. Very good condition. Item #21657
