The story of America's first double agent, Enoch Crosby (1750 - 1835), an itinerant cobbler, soldier in the Continental Army and spy recruited by John Jay. Crosby posed as a British spy working for General Howe, operating mostly in Westchester County NY, which at the time was "neutral ground" between the colonial forces further north and British controlled New York City.

Bound with the first 24 pages of "Book of Heroes" by Robert Ramble, which includes Demosthenes, Luitprand, and Alfred the Great. The last story is only a teaser as it ends abruptly, having just started the tale of Alfred the Great. According to Howes B161 this is how all copies were issued. Includes one wood engraving signed by Abel Bowen.

Large 12mo, 104pp; 24pp. Illustrated with woodcuts throughout the text. Quarter red cloth over pictorial printed paper covered boards, with front board illustration of Enoch Crosby carrying large pack on his back. Advertisement for juvenile books published by U. P. James at rear board. A very good copy with lightly soiled boards, with contents clean and bright. OCLC: 78627599. Very good condition. Item #21665
