1933; 1940. A pair of press b&w photographs, with the original printed newspaper text at verso of each image, of the "Bear of Oakland". The first showing the ship undergoing final repairs in a dry dock in Boston, where a new propellor and rudder were being installed. The ship seen from the stern with the city of Boston in the background. Text tipped on verso dated 9/20/33. 7 x 9" [with] a secondary photograph of the ship on the ocean at Valparaiso Chile, with the text sheet on verso which explains, "The ship "Bear" of the US Antarctic Expedition shown arriving here recently from the Antarctic. On board was Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, Commander of the expedition. Most of the members of the expedition are remaining at their bases in Antarctica for the duration of the South Pole winter." The 'Bear' was built in Scotland in the 1870s, used as a seal hunting vessel, purchased by the US to rescue the Adolphus Greely party marooned in the Arctic, and here used by Byrd for his Antarctic expedition of 1933-1935.
