A revised and corrected edition of Beach's 'Family Physician' with a total of 35 plates, which includes: frontispiece portrait, 12 hand colored anatomical plates, 18 hand colored botanical plates, 1 gilt (gold medals awarded to Dr. Beach) plate, 2 b&w plates, and 1 folding b&w plate. Includes a lengthy Materia Medica, listing plants from "Abscess Root" through to "Yellow Puccoon" (Golden Seal). Beach cites Native Americans' use of plants: "[Golden Seal] is much used in Ohio, Kentucky, and other western states, as a wash for ophthalmic diseases, and is considered a specific by the Indians ... (p802).

Wooster Beach (1794-1868), was an American medical practitioner, founder and teacher of "Eclectic Medicine", a branch of medicine using botanical remedies and physical therapy practices, popular in the 19th century.

Thick 4to, frontispiece portrait, lxv, 1071pp, Index [xxv], plates, b&w in text illustrations. Three quarter black leather and plum buckram boards. Spine a bit rubbed, modern paper label laid down.
