Stratford Upon Avon/ Oxford: Shakespeare Head Press/ Basil Blackwell, 1928. First edition. Hardcover. Handsome unopened first edition eight volume set of "Plutarch's Lives" in the original dust jackets, a limited edition of 500, of which this is number 78. Handsome decorated head-pieces by Thomas Lowinsky.

This handsomely printed set of North's classic translation is printed from the first edition of 1579. Lowinsky's exquisite portrait head-pieces are as close to the authentic originals as possible. Plutarch relates the lives of the historically important Greeks and Romans of ancient times. His studies are revered as among the most important and beautiful of all classical writings. The author's object was to bring out the moral character in each case; at times he will distort the truth in order to exemplify virtue or vice. Nonetheless, he is as reliable as the sources he uses and very valuable as a historical resource - this edition is well-known as a primary source for the plots of Shakespeare's classical plays, the non-Roman ones and for the historical background of ancient Rome. Thomas North's translation is one of the most famous - his prose is considered by many to be "incomparable. [his] achievement in narrative prose is only less signal than Shakespeare's in dramatic verse."
