This volume illustrated with mezzotints, including a classic full page mezzotint of Napoleon standing at cliffside looking off towards France, titled "Napoleon at St. Helena" (Engraved for the Eclectic Museum by John Sartain). Sartain was a British born artist & engraver who pioneered the technique of mezzotint engraving in the US. Includes articles on a broad range of topics, including 'Bingham's Expedition to China', and 'Exploration of the Indian Territory, A Report of an Exploration of the Country lying between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains', by Lieut. J. C. Fremont.

Three quarter tan leather and green marbled boards, gilt title at spine. Tall 8vo, vi, 576pp. Boards and spine a bit rubbed; some foxing to early and late pages. Ex-lib, with lib stamp at front paste down. With an early owner signature and inscription by the daughter of Rev. W. R. French, of Turner, Maine. Good condition. Item #22457
