Wellington: Harry H. Tombs, 1932. Hardcover. An early but broken run of this little poetry anthology, 15 volumes in total, 11 in the publishers colored card wrappers and 4 volumes hard cover with printed dust jackets, spanning 1932 to 1954. The early editions are edited by Charles Marris and published by Harry Tombs, the later are edited by Louis Johnson and published by A.H. & A.W. Reed.
Many of these issues were the property of J.R. Hervey, New Zealand poet and Anglican minister. His signature appears on several front wrappers, sometimes with his notation of his poems published within. Two copies of 1941, one stamped "Review copy". Most with the bookseller's label for Newbold's Bookshop, Dunedin. Some issues are stamped "J. Dennis Hervey". The later hard covers were not Hervey's copies.
A nice clutch of these magazines, from the first anthology issued, including authors such as Robin Hyde, J.C. Anderson, Eileen Duggan, J.R. Hervey and Dora Hagemeyer. The early wrapper copies are in very good condition, perhaps with the edges a little bent and rusted staples but very good overall. The hard bound copies with slightly worn dust jackets, the boards very good. Item #22512
