Surface Japan. Short Notes Of A Swift Survey.

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1911. First edition. Hardcover. A charmingly informal description of a trip to Japan by a wealthy American, illustrated with color photogravures of many aspects of Japanese life such as tea picking, the tea ceremony, musical performers, street vendors, Sumo wrestlers, family scenes, fishing & agriculture. With a translation section which includes phrases to be used to "impress the objurgated" (severely scolded), such as "You had better look out, sirrah!" (pp41-44).

Small 4to, 158pp, tipped in color frontispiece, 19 color photogravures and illustrations in the text after Hokusai. Quarter gray cloth and decorative Japanese paper covered boards, with red title at front board and black title at spine. A clean, tight copy with a bit of rubbing at edges of boards, spine slightly etched. The signature and the book plate of Paul Dinant, San Francisco; also signature of J. C. Bentz, Feb. 17, 1912, on front end paper. Good + overall. Item #22552
