Essendon, Vic: Fathers of the Irish Mission to China, 1926. Hardcover. 12 monthly issues (Oct. 1925 - Sept. 1925) of the Catholic newspaper for mission work in China, all bound with their original wrappers, published by the Australian branch of the Irish Mission and printed in Melbourne.

The Irish Mission League's goal was "to band members of the Irish race in Ireland, Australasia, and America into one grand missionary army for the conversion of China".
The mission was established in the Hanyang district on the Yangtze River (modern day Wuhan) under the name of the Columban Fathers.

The monthly issues of the newspaper include much information on contemporary life in China during the period of great political upheaval which took place when Sun Yat-sen died and the leadership of the Kuomintang (Nationalist Party of China) was taken over by Chiang Kai-shek.

Content includes: Convent Life in Hanyang; a series of essays titled 'Cheerful China', with one essay titled 'Peerless Pekin' , illustrated with b&w printed photographs including a main thoroughfare of Peking, entrance to the Temple of Heaven, walled fortress, and portrait of Bishop Faveau; and 'Young China in the Making' by Rev. Harty, superior of the Christian Brothers Community, Han Yang, with photographic illustrations of the College Chapel, class halls, St. Columban's Senior Football team, and the college refectory. Also an article on opium smuggling, "The Opium Smuggler of Tsao Shih", (Oct. 1, 1925; p9) with full page b&w printed photographs of addicts (p8).

4to, 25 - 30pp per issue, with the original color wrappers bound in. Three quarter maroon leather and maroon cloth. Gilt title at front cover and spine. Top of spine cracked with loss at title. Orange crayon note front cover reads, "Austr. 1925 -26." Issues bright and clean. Good +. Item #22697
