Ca. 1950s. Vibrant period pieces by an unfortunately unnamed artist, as shop display advertising for the Retail Fruit Trade Federation Ltd. Incorporated in London 24 Jul 1937, the Retail Fruit Trade fellows were remarkably prescient - the two main banners say "Eat More Fruit and Keep Fit" and "Eat more Vegetables and Salads - The Fruits of the Earth". There are 10 pieces in extraordinary condition, with bright, unsunned colors and a 1950s vibe.
Two large banners, "Eat More Fruit and Keep Fit," 35 x 15" and "Eat more Vegetables and Salads- The Fruits of the Earth," 35 x 16 3/4". There are 2 panoramic pastoral scenes- one a pair of horses plowing, man behind guiding them, the other fruit trees in the foreground, with a vista of bounty behind, 22 1/4 x 4 1/2". There are three pairs of corner decorations. One pair is strictly vegetables - lettuce, cucumber, beets, leak, tomatoes, radishes & the other cauliflower, cabbage, peas, beans, brussels sprouts, tomatoes. The 2nd pair is of a boy and girl holding baskets, one filed with grapes, peaches, banana, cherries, plum, apple with an orange tree behind him and the girl with tomatoes, beans, cabbage, cucumber & turnips, measuring 13 1/2 x 16 3/4". The 3rd set are long panoramic views of fields and an ocean liner on the seat with corner decorations of fruit and vegetables, measuring 34 x 8".
A couple of borders with slight tears repaired, but overall in outstanding condition, very vibrant and crisp. It is quite unusual to find a complete shop set like this, especially in this condition, clearly never utilized in a display. Very good condition. Item #22792
