Zurich and Stuttgart: Schachgesellschaft Zurich; Artemis Verlag, 1959. First edition. Hardcover. A Swiss work on the World Chess Tournament in Zurich and also a classic example of 1950s Swiss book design. The tournament consisted of 10 foreign players, including eight grandmasters, competing against 6 top Swiss players, including the national champion Keller. Grandmasters invited were Mikhail Tal and Paul Keres (Soviet Union), Bobby Fischer (US), Svetozar Gligoric (Yugoslavia), Bent Larsen (Denmark), Wolfgang Unzicker (Germany), and Fridrik Olafsson (Iceland).

Includes a series of close up photographic portraits of the players, including a young Bobby Fischer.

The book, designed by Rold Schroeter in the modernist "neue grafik" style, is in a square format, with multi column text with asymmetric titles, and sans serif type face. Schroeter, who studied at the Hfg Ulm and worked as a typographic designer for Artemis Verlag, took the cover photograph. This book won a "most beautiful books of Switzerland" award.

Square 8vo, 233pp, [1] pp table of contents, b&w printed photographic ills. Paper covered hard boards with b&w photographic illustration close up of chess pieces. Title in white at front board, in black on off white spine. Front board faintly dusty, o/w very good condition. Very good condition. Item #22891
