A very early account of the convict situation at Swan River (Perth, Western Australia) concerning transportation, which did not commence to Western Australia until 1856. The article concerns the attempted escape of an American who was convicted of manslaughter in England and transported to Swan River, and three others (pp50-53, April issue). Also includes an article on the ending of the American Civil War and the assassination of President Lincoln (pp399-417), and a very detailed description of Civil War era New York City (New York: Clinton Place into Broadway) from "uptown" (5th Ave between 10th & 20th St.) to "downtown" and the Battery (pp30-37).
8vo, 600pp. Three quarter dark green morocco and marbled boards, gilt title and gilt raised bands at spine, all edges marbled. With the armorial bookplate of Weston Webb at the front paste down, with motto "Ne Cede Malis". Spine rubbed, gilt title label & decorations a bit cracked. Good + overall. Item #22947
