1889-1893. Hardcover. The account book of a West Point cadet who served in Cuba during the Spanish American War and later in WWI at the Battle of St Mihiel (Sept. 1918), the first major offensive of the AEF as an independent army under the command of General John J. Pershing.

Otho Farr's account book includes two receipts from the USMA Treasurer's Office pasted in for payments of $80 and $20, both dated June of 1889; both are signed by Wm F. Spurgin, Treasurer.

Farr's list of orders from the Quartermaster's Department begins in June 1889 and continues right through to June of 1893 and his graduation. Entries, recorded in manuscript, include the amount of his pay (pay from May 1 to June 11 1893 was $61.50). Items paid for include board, laundry, barber, hospital, the Dialectic Society, the Gas Fund, Hops and German, Damages to Mess Property (he only had to pay on 2 occasions), his uniform and other clothing and personal care, and books. The books include such titles as 'Art of War', Military Engineering, Spanish Dictionary and various grammars.

Otho Willard Burnham Farr was born ca. 1872 born in Maine. On June 12, 1893 he graduated from West Point (1851) and was appointed to the 2nd U. S. Artillery Rgt., and later that year to the 4th U. S. Artillery Rgt.

In November 1893 Farr was transferred to the 2nd U. S. Artillery Rgt. in Santiago, Cuba. From March 2, 1899 he was made 1st lieutenant, with 1899-1902 service in Cuba. On Feb. 2, 1901 he transferred to the Artillery Corps, and on July 1, 1901 he was made captain of artillery regiment and 101st Field artillery brigade commander with the American Expeditionary Force. He retired in 1926 due to disability, and on Feb. 3, 1940 died in California. Farr is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Plot: Sec: 9, Site: 5867.

8vo, 57pp are completed in manuscript on printed and ruled order pages. Full tan leather with "Ledger Folio" and a blank, with a space for the Cadet's name and June 18-- to be filled in by hand. With a later paper wrapper with title completed in a later hand, and date of 1943. Leather spine lacking, inner hinges cracked but holding; first leaf loosely inserted. Entry pages clean and bright, the entries clean and legible. Good + overall. Item #23101
