Archive of Bellevue Hospital Training School for Nurses publications, 1915 - 1949.

New York: Bellevue, 1915 - 1949. First edition. Hardcover. A total of 11 separately printed publications spanning the period of the two world wars, and describing the early history of the renowned New York City hospital and its school of nursing.

The Training School for Nurses opened in 1873, and was the first school in United States to be organized according to Florence Nightingale's nursing principles. Bellevue is the oldest American public hospital, founded in 1736, boasting the first maternity ward in the country and with the second ambulance service in America, begun in 1869, thanks to the hospital’s Civil War involvement.

Bellevue Hospital and the nursing school felt the impact of World War I; in 1916 enrollment of nurses for Base Hospital No. 1 in Europe was initiated. 65 nursing graduates were called up in early 1918. In the Alumnae quarterly of June 1916 in this archive, the creation of this WWI hospital unit (the "Bellevue Unit") is described. In the Bellevue year book for 1921, there is a lengthy article illustrated with b&w printed photographs describing the work of the Bellevue Unit and its nurses and doctors at Base Hospital No. 1 right up to demobilization.
