Archives of G.W. Cottrell, Noted American Ornithologist from New Hampshire.
c. 1958-65. Ephemera. Approximately 400 original photographs of the Cottrell's ornithological trip around Australia, New Guinea, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, New Britain, Guadalcanal, the Solomon Islands, Fiji, India, Thailand & Cambodia in 1964-5 and South Africa & Tanzania in 1958. G. W. Cottrell [1903-1995] was the founding editor of the Harvard Library Bulletin and research associate in ornithology at Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology, director of the Massachusetts Audubon Society and editor of James Lee Peters's 16 volume "Checklist of Birds of the World". Most shots are of birds, their habitats, flora and fauna, landscapes, the apparatus of bird watching and examining bird life, as well as the Cottrell's camp.
Most of the photographs are annotated on the verso with the subject, location, date, and names of any people in the image. Some of the names associated with the photos include: Arthur Matthews, Graham Chapman, Jon Rowley, Cyril Hadley, Steve Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Peter Davidson, Dom Serventy, Ollie Miegitis, Theo Tonnelier.
In all, there are photos of Western Australia near Yalgoo (76), New South Wales /Victoria /Queensland (30); Fisher Island Tasmania including Dom Serventy (23); Africa (92); New Guinea near Mt. Wilhelm (45) (people and natives); New Hebrides (35); Cambodia (temples) (24); India (Odisha) (24); New Caledonia (18); England & Italy (14); Thailand (12); Tanzania (12); Fiji (7); New Britain (6); Guadalcanal (5); Solomon Islands (4); Cottrells in New Hampshire (5). There are duplicates of some images.
Approx. 400 black & white photographs, 6.75 x 4.75", a few sized 4.5 x 3.75". Most have matte finish, with the exception of the African photographs, which are glossy. Most notations are in pencil (occasionally pen) on verso, and the images are slightly bowed. Otherwise very good condition. Item #23317
