Item #23370 Cabin Plan, Hamburg American Line's "Blucher" Steamship, WWI.

Cabin Plan, Hamburg American Line's "Blucher"

New York: Rankin Co., 1907. A large plan of the twin screw steamship 'Blucher' for a cruise to central America during the construction of the Panama Canal. This was the period when the canal was under the supervision of US Army General and civil engineer, George Washington Goethals.

The 'Blucher' had a fascinating W.W.I history. She first sailed under the German flag, and was built by Blohm & Voss Shipbuilders, Hamburg, Germany (1902) for the Hamburg America Line. In 1912 she was rebuilt, with luxury suites added. At the beginning of World War I 'Blucher' was interned in then neutral Brazil. In 1917, due to repeated sinkings of Brazilian merchant ships by German submarines, Brazil became the only Latin American country to join the war, seizing German vessels, including this ship, which was renamed 'Leopoldina'.

The advertising text printed in red for a "Grand Cruise to the West Indies, From New York... January 31, 1907 to March 5, 1907."
