Microscopic Life in the Ocean at the South Pole, and at considerable depths, extract.

Calcutta: W. Risdale, Bishop's College Press, 1845. An excerpt from the 'Calcutta Journal of Natural History, and Miscellany of the Arts and Sciences in India', which includes 3 articles, one of which focuses on the recent work on microscopic sea life in the Antarctic from samples collected by Dr. Joseph Hooker on board the 'Erebus' on Captain James Clark Ross' expedition (1839 - 1843).

The Antarctic article is titled 'On the Microscopic Life in the Ocean at the South Pole, and at Considerable Depths', by Professor C. G. Ehrenberg. Ehrenberg was a noted German proto-zoologist who analyzed samples of sea water sent by Hooker, identifying 7 new genera and 71 new species of sea life. This added greatly to the understanding of the food chain in the Antarctic seas, and revealed that "even the ice and snow of the south Polar Sea is rich in living organisms ..." (p569).

Additional articles include 'Colouring of the Waters of the Red Sea' by M. Montagne; and by Prof. Owen: 'Description of a Fossil Molar Tooth of a Mastodon discovered by Count Strzlecki in Australia' by Prof. Owen, with 2 in text illustrations.

8vo, pp555-576, excerpted from Vol. 5. Mounted in modern card cover with handwritten title at front in pen. Very good condition. Item #23388
