Item #23516 "The Tumbler, or its Affinities". Caricature. Horsemanship, Henry William Bunbury.

"The Tumbler, or its Affinities". Caricature.

London: W. Dickinson, 1791. Fine original hand colored copper engraved caricature from Bunbury's 'Annals of Horsemanship'. Henry Bunbury (1750 - 1811) was a British artist whose caricatures rank with those of contemporary artists James Gillray and Thomas Rowlandson. Bunbury was well liked by the upper classes of his day; he was in good favor with the powerful, and was careful not to attempt political satire. Bunbury was captain of the West Suffolk Militia, an opportunity which allowed him the opportunity to observe and produce caricatures of horsemanship.

A fine copy on crisp, clean sturdy art paper, with good wide margins around the impression mark. 8 3/8 x 10" on paper 9 1/4 x 13 1/2". The British Museum records a collection of satirical prints by Bunbury, although not this title. Very good condition. Item #23516
