Tahiti: Ca. 1905. A fine panorama of Papeete Harbor, titled in French and English, signed "L. G." at the left, and with the studio stamp "L. Gauthier, Tahiti" at the lower right.
Lucien Gauthier was a French born photographer (1875 - 1971) renowned for his Tahitian photographs of beautiful local women. Gauthier ran a portrait studio in Tahiti for only 2 years, 1904 -1906, and was then required to return to France to complete his military service. Catholic missionaries in Tahiti had been unable to make nudity a moral failing, so Gauthier had no shortage of models.
This panorama shows the wide expanse of the harbor, various vessels at dock, and a beautifully smoky sky with mountains capped with clouds in the distance. 11 x 4 3/4". "L. Gauthier Papeete Tahiti" ink stamp at verso. Trimmed left and right side to image.
