Scarce commemorative address, in which the author recalls the assassination of the president by a disappointed office seeker: "Garfield was a martyr no less than Lincoln; the one to the vile and threatening heresy of the Spoils System, as the other to the expiring heresy of Secession".

The Reverend Denis Wortman (1835 - 1922) minister of the Dutch Reformed Church, was born in East Fishkill, NY, and held pastorates at Brooklyn, N. Y. (1860-63), Philadelphia, Schenectady, N. Y.; Fort Plain, N. Y., and Saugerties (1883-1901). He was a respected writer of hymns, several of which are in current use.
