1916. Shackelton was on a lecture tour heading east from Australia. On November 8th, 1916, he gave a speech at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco about the Endurance expedition. This poem is written in his own hand on Palace Hotel, San Francisco letterhead, where he met Robert Peary:

"Dawn lands for youth to leap
Dim lands where Empires sleep
And all that dolphined deep
Where the Ships Swing
(Anon)"
