New York: J. Disturnell, 102 Broadway between Pine & Wall Strs, 1847. Third edition. Hardcover. A scarce Hudson River item, a folding hand-colored panoramic map of the river in 38 panels, measuring 13 feet 6 inches by 6 inches wide, with 38pp text describing the route. In 1845, New York artists William Wade and William Croome created and copyrighted a twelve-foot-long panorama illustrating in detail both shores of the Hudson River between Albany and New York City. The same year, this remarkable pictorial record, a pocket-sized fold out map, with detailed annotations & information, was published with an accompanying text. The map was issued colored for $2.00, and black & white for $1.50; this is a colored issue.

More detail was added to this edition - besides the addition of six extra pages of text (to 38pp), there are many more names included on the map. In the New York City area, these additions over the first edition include the name Brooklyn; Long Island; at Governor's Island, the names South Battery & Castle William are included. Other named areas include Redhook, Buttermilk Chan., Atlantic Dock, South Ferry & East River. Fort Wood is added to Bellows Id.; Oyster Banks & New Jersey. In the Hudson Highlands area, new additions to the map include the name of Chapel of Our Lady (listed only as 'Church" on first edition); Indian Falls, and DeRham in the Garrison area. The relief is shown by spot heights and the map shows points of interest and miles from New York City.

12mo, original green gilt cloth over boards, title & decoration in gilt. Rebacked with matching green cloth. The last panel lined with tissue. Pamphlet a little foxed, not affecting the map. Boards 4 3/8 x 6 1/8". With a handsome quarter green calf & marbled boards solander box signed "JPW 1945". Leather & gilt private library label for "Terry" with coat of arms. OCLC: 14082196. Very good condition. Item #23865
