West Point. Andrew Melrose, West Point.
West Point.

West Point.

ca. 1880s. A large, impressive chromolithograph view of West Point, seen from the river looking north and up at the cliffs & the imposing citadel. In the foreground are a sloop being unloaded and a small passenger steamer with red and white striped awning, while in the middle distance is an imposing paddle wheeled steamer reminiscent of the Mary Powell, heading down river with all her flags flying. Steamboats had become very popular on the Hudson by the 1840's, and Melrose, a landscape painter (born in Scotland, emigrated to the United States in 1856) & who had done views of New York Harbor and the Battery, employs them here to festive effect. In the distance are sloops and other steamers, and the mountains of the Hudson Highlands. Signature at the lower left and titled at the lower right. Image 36 x 22" with large margins. Matted and framed archivally in a silver gilt and wood frame, 44 x 29 1/2" Item #24014

Price: $2,750.00
