New York: Harper & Brothers, 1891. First edition. Hardcover. The first book on American football written by the Yale coach, player and sports writer dubbed the "Father of American Football", Walter Camp.

Camp (1859 - 1925) had a major role in the founding of American football as it evolved from its rugby football origins. He proposed changes to the US College rules convention that resulted in important inventions such as the line of scrimmage, the snap back from center, the points system, the system of downs, the standard offensive arrangement of players and the safety touch. Camp was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1951, and in addition to numerous articles and books, published an annual "All American" team.

Small 8vo, frontispiece, 175pp, ads [4]pp. In the original blue gilt cloth with red white and blue cover design of American double eagles clutching gilt footballs. With 31 photographs of stars from Harvard, Princeton and Yale. Previous owner book plate and signature, front board and spine ends slightly rubbed. Very good condition. Item #24020
