Washington DC: U.S. Army, 1945. Hardcover. Specially bound presentation copy belonging to Robert P. Patterson, Secretary of War under President Roosevelt during World War II.

Scarce two volume set of the formally classified history of the Third Army, produced by the Third U.S. Army Headquarters and the XIX Tactical Command, on General George Patton's Army in Europe in World War II. The work was classified as "Secret" when first published but was later declassified. Volume I, "The Operations," combines narratives and data on movements, operations, loss of war materiel, and casualties, and is heavily supplemented with maps and supporting documentation.

We have seen a copy giving a limitation of 182 copies published, although we do not see this printed in either volume.

These are from the library of Robert Patterson, Secretary of War. Patterson was the Under Secretary of War in 1940 and was instrumental in the mobilization of the armed forces preparatory to and during World War II. In 1945 he became Secretary of War under President Franklin Roosevelt and President Harry Truman.

Outsize oblong folio. These are not signed by Patterson, but they are from his library (which we purchased.)

Volume I, "The Operations": 421pp. Annexes: XXII, XXXVI, LXVI; 146pp. printed photographs and maps throughout. Map Supplement sleeve at rear with 14 color folding maps. Original acetate sheets between chapters, and maps at end papers.

Volume II, "Staff Section Reports", consists of 25 section reports: Command, G-1, G-2, G-3, G-4, G-5, Adjutant General, Anti-Aircraft Artillery, Artillery, Chaplain, Chemical Warfare, Engineer, Finance, Headquarters Commandant, Inspector General, Judge Advocate, Medical, Ordnance, Provost Marshal, Public Relations, Quartermaster, Signal, Special Services, Tank Destroyer, and Air.

Presentation binding, black morocco spine with screw posts, and tan calf boards with title "Third U. S. Army Volume I" and "Third U.S. Army Volume II" in blue, surrounding an embroidered "A" patch in red, white and blue.

Boards and spines somewhat rubbed; calf split along edges of front board of Vol I. Slight creasing to early leaves both volumes, otherwise in very good condition. OCLC: 7515343. Very good condition. Item #24021
