Sydney: 1875-6. Ephemera. An albumen photograph of the home of John Kinloch, a member of the first cohort of students at the University of Sydney. Annotated on the verso "John Kinloch's House, Queen Elizabeth St. Sydney 1875 /76. Old Kinney in academicals & Harry Bridson." The photo shows his house from the road with a fence in front and Kinloch in academic clothing with Bridson on the 2nd story verandah.

John Kinloch was one of the first cohort of students to enroll at the University of Sydney in 1852. After graduation he became a tutor and schoolmaster. He was also a keen sportsman and played cricket for New South Wales. In 1878, Kinloch started his own school called the Hurlstone School and College, though it closed two years later. It became the Hurlstone Teacher Training College of Female Teachers for the next 24 years. At some point, Trinity Grammar School was on the site of the school.

Harry Bridson is listed as an Old Member of University College, Oxford, matriculated in 1867, (d. 1922). The source of this is Arthur Finch Charrington's photograph album UC-P211 at the University College, Oxford. Arnold Kirke-Smith, English footballer, also appears in the album.

Photograph b&w, 6 x 4.5" laid down on board 10 x 8". Photo somewhat faded, board dusty, upper left corner creased with small crack, ruffled at bottom. Annotated on the verso by an unknown person. Good + overall. Item #24037
