Telegraphic Cipher Code for Private and Confidential Use between The Corn Exchange Bank of New York City and its Correspondents.
New York: 1909. Hardcover. A cipher code book from the Corn Exchange Bank to one of its subsidiaries the First National Bank of Middletown, NY. The first page has a hand written code number of 145 with the text, "All important telegrams should conclude with the correct test word as given below:" with a different hand written code word for each day of the week. The book chapters are: Calendar, Banks etc., Bankers, Cents, Fractions, Rates of Interest, Numbers and Dollars, Miscellaneous Phrases, with a different word representing every month, day, year, bank, person, number, dollar etc. Loosely inserted is a letter from the Corn Exchange Bank to First National Bank dated Feb. 9, 1922 advising a correction on page 43.
The Corn Exchange Bank was originally founded in 1853 in New York but with branches in other states, and acquired other community banks over time. Offices were on William and Beaver Streets, William Street and then Grove Street (off of 7th Ave. in Greenwich Village).
