These volumes include the steel engravings of sacred Christian sites by William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854), the renowned British illustrator and landscape artist, noted for his views of all parts of the world, which appeared in a series of travel volumes.
Bartlett plates here include Shrine of the Nativity, Mount Carmel, Nazareth, Samaria, Jerusalem, Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Cavern Where the Holy Cross was Found, Garden of Gethsemane, Mount of Olives, Bethlehem, Hebron, Petra, Mount Sinai, Suez, the Parthenon at Athens, and Rome From the Capital.
Large 4to. Vol I: engraved half title, [2]pp, iv, 126pp. Vol II, engraved frontispiece, [2]pp, 127-234, [2]pp, map, 79 plates. All edges gilt. Gilt decorated dark brown buckram, with ornate gilt borders, gilt decorated spine with raised bands, gilt inner dentelles. Spines slightly rubbed; slight fox spotting to the double plate of Jerusalem, primarily in the margins. Very good - condition. Item #24230
