"An imaginary voyage which takes the hero to the Bay of Islands, Waimate, Hokianga, for an interview with de Thierry, and on to Auckland, with an account of the Treaty of Waitangi signing (p. 180-226)"--Bagnall. This children's book also includes Australian gold content; "Australia - New South Wales -Port Phillip - Gold", describing the discoveries in Victoria: "At the first burst of the gold diggings the newly arriving hosts were compelled to dwell in tents, and "Canvas Town" will long be recollected by Victorians. .... Victoria sends to the mother country vast quantities of wool and hides, & c., and the yearly export of gold from this and the other Australian colonies amounts to so many tons as represent a coined value of L20,000,000" (p172).

Presentation copy, inscribed to "Master Albert Stevens, with the author's best wishes, 31st Dec. 1860". Complete with the maps, including the hand colored engraved maps of Australia with vignettes of Sydney Harbour and Port Phillip and Geelong Harbours (p158); Van Diemen's Land (p148); and New Zealand including Auckland Harbour (p180). Includes in text b&w woodblock illustrations of the lyre bird, emu and kangaroo etc.

In the original publisher's maroon gilt cloth. 8vo, 239pp, illustrations, maps. Blind stamped red cloth binding with gilt titles, covers marked, worn at spine. Internally, mild fox spotting at early leaves; the maps are bright and clean. Muir 7118. OCLC: 29791133. Good + condition. Item #24236
