Durand was a noted painter of the Hudson River School, a group of American landscape painters whose romantic vision was inspired by the Hudson River Valley, the Catskills and Adirondacks.
Plates include bank note vignettes and a wide range of subjects, from classical figures, portraits and New York landscapes. The landscapes are: Sycamore Tree, Plaaterkill Cove; Butternut Tree, Lake George; Oak Tree, Fishkill Landing (Study from nature on the Domain of Gulian C. Verplanck, near Fishkill Landing, Hudson River; p188); and Pine Tree at Lake George. The Oak Tree was drawn from nature on the property of Gulian Verplanck, one of the earliest Dutch settlers of then Fishkill Landing, now Beacon, NY.
