A work commissioned by the Admiralty to assist Naval officers in undertaking scientific research while at sea, containing a chapter on Geology by Charles Darwin. The book provides instructions on disciplines including astronomy, magnetism, hydrography, tides, geography, earthquakes, mineralogy, meteorology, atmospheric waves, zoology, botany, ethnology and geology, written by experts in the fields including Sabine, Beechey, Whewell, Hamilton, Mallet, Darwin, Hooker and Herschel himself.

Darwin's essay 'Geology' appears on pages 166 - 204. It offers much information to the field geologist, taken from Darwin's experience on the 'Beagle'.
