Pearls and Pearling.

Signed presentation copy, to Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes (1862 - 1948), who famously noted the importance of the role of the judiciary in America: "We are under a Constitution, but the Constitution is what the judges say it is, and the judiciary is the safeguard of our liberty and of our property under the Constitution. (Speech before the Chamber of Commerce, Elmira, New York (3 May 1907); published in Addresses and Papers of Charles Evans Hughes, Governor of New York, 1906–1908 (1908), p. 139).

The inscription reads, "Presented, with the compliments of the author, to Hon. Charles E. Hughes, July 11th, 1916. Herbert H. Vertrees."

8vo, 203 pp, [5] pp ads, 53 b&w illustrations. 5 1/4 x 6 7/8". Original grey cloth with green title and pictorial decoration on front boards. Looks like some white flaking on the oyster on the cover, still a very bright, clean copy. Internally clean, binding tight, slightly sunned at spine. OCLC: 3852496. Very good condition. Item #24411
