Columbia Gives To Her Son the Accolade of the New Chivalry of Humanity. Howard S. Steelman, Pvt. Co. D, 105th Engineers, Served with Honor in the World War and was Wounded in Action. WWI Award.

World War I lithographic certificate made out to wounded soldier, depicting Columbia dressed in white, with a large billowing American flag behind her, knighting a uniformed soldier with bayonet kneeling in front of her.

The name of the honoree, Steelman, is written in ink below the image, followed by text and the signature of Woodrow Wilson.

Private Steelman was injured on September 29, 1918 when the 30th Division, known as Old Hickory, (soldiers mostly from North and South Carolina and Tennessee) fighting in France and assigned to the American Expeditionary Force, broke through the "Hindenburg Line", a very important segment of the German defensive line on the Western Front. This assault was part of the series of attacks known as the Hundred Days Offensive, which ultimately led to the November 1918 Armistice and the end of fighting.
