Depicting a mustached French soldier holding his young child in his arms, as his exhausted wife looks out at the viewer. "Un poilu" is the affectionate slang term for a French W.W.I infantryman, meaning a hairy or scruffy one.

Steinlen (1859–1923) the famed Swiss born printmaker who settled and worked in Montmartre, Paris, is noted for his impressive posters of cafes and night life. He was a socialist whose images display his lifelong support and focus on the working class.

12 x 18 3/4". Title written in pencil at bottom of print. Tipped on to heavier stock. OCLC: 881025539 records a copy at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. Very good condition. Item #24534
