West was a prominent English orientalist and translator of Zoroastrian texts, who prepared the Pahlavi texts ('Marvels of Zoroastrianism') for Prof. Muller's 'Sacred Books of the East' series. Muller's monumental work is the English translation of essential sacred texts of Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Zoroastrianism, Jainism, and Islam.

The Vendidad is an important cultural and ethical moral guide for Zoroastrians, a collection of texts including prayers, myths and religious observances. In part, it describes various sources of evil, and ways to defend against them.
