West Point NY: 1859. Wraps. Life at West Point written in poem form, with pencil annotations by a West Point graduate. One such miniature annotation refers to "tender hot-house plants" in the text. It reads "Cadets have been called by such names by those opposed to the institution".

Horace Porter (1837 - 1921) West Point graduate, had a distinguished military and political career, serving in the Union Army and as personal secretary to General and President US Grant, as secretary to General William T. Sherman, and as US Ambassador to France.

8vo, 16pp. Printed paper wrappers, ruffled and chipped at edges, two vertical creases at at rear wrapper with some nicks, loose in wrappers. OCLC: 1005580626 records a copy at the University of Pennsylvania. This work was later published in New York, in 1866, under title: "Illustrated with pen and ink sketches, by a cadet. To which is added the song, 'Benny Havens, oh!" Good condition. Item #24627
